Mexico’s new telecommunications regulator, the Federal Telecommunications Institute, said it is nearing the announcement of the telco firms in the nation it has determined to be dominant, say reports.
The watchdog’s head Gabriel Contreras told reporters that the list could be announced as early as this month. Companies on that list are deemed to hold a dominant position in the market and could therefore be potentially subjected to regulation in efforts to heighten competition.
According to reports, the nation’s top wireless operator is America Movil, owned by billionaire Carlos Slims, with a 70 percent market control for mobile phones; the company is said to own 80 percent of the nation’s fixed line business. Television firm Televisa controls more than 60 percent of the TV broadcast market.
Any company found to hold more than a 50 percent market share will be declared predominant by the IFT, say reports.
While the list of dominant players could be announced soon, the regulator has until next March to decide which regulations to impose upon those companies.
