US: State supermarket buyout warrants federal review

The proposed merger of supermarket chains Albertson’s and United Supermarkets will require federal approval, according to one expert.

    Albertson’s said it plans to acquire United, though antitrust lawyer Frank Carroll – chair of the State Bar of Texas Antitrust and Business Litigation Section – said such a merger will be subject to approval from either the US Federal Trade Commission or Department of Justice.

    Albertson’s is based in Idaho, while United is based in Texas.

    Albertson’s announced the deal last month and said United would continue to operate all of its United Supermarkets, Market Street and Amigos grocery names as an Albertson’s subsidiary.

    The two did not disclose financial details of the proposal.
