The UK’s telecommunications regulator Ofcom is reportedly seeking input from telco operators whether they would be interested in new radio spectrum currently being prepared for release by the Ministry of Defense, say reports.
The MoD is set to make 40MHz of radio spectrum for “civil use” under the release of Ofcom; in a statement the watchdog described the spectrum as “particularly attractive in supporting a wide range of potential consumer applications.”
In particular, Ofcom said, the spectrum could help companies deliver 4G wireless broadband services as “spectrum bands are being ‘harmonized’ across European countries.’” The EU is currently preparing reforms to the wireless market in favor of consolidation.
The regulator is allowing operators until November 27 to express interest in licensing the spectrum.
