The head of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission spoke at a conference to offer a competition expert’s insight of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership plan, a proposal for ASEAN nations to establish a regional free trade area, say reports.
The proposal would include 10 member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, along with neighboring nations that hold existing FTAs with ASEAN countries, including Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea and New Zealand.
At a seminar, ACCC head Rod Sims spoke of the importance of including competition provisions within those RTAs for positive economic development.
Such inclusions would “ensure all the participating economies enjoy the benefits of competition,” Sims said of the RCEP plans.
Further, Sims championed the cooperation between the regional competition regulators to enhance competition policy.
