India-based consumer group Air Passengers Association of India filed a petition with the Competition Commission of India against various airlines, claiming an anticompetitive 25 percent fare hike – the result of an industry-wide cartel.
Reports say the APAI accused domestic carriers for colluding to raise prices, especially around certain holidays and festivals, and called for immediate action by the CCI. In its complaint, the group alleges the cartel to have been funning for about three or four years.
Reports say all domestic carriers, including Air India, as well as Jet Airways, increased their prices by 25 percent.
The nation’s aviation minister Ajit Singh announced earlier this year plans to create an economic body to monitor the airlines’ pricing mechanism, a cell which has yet to begin functioning.
