Botswana: Local bakers shoot down rumors of wheat tax agreement

Going against previous rumors of an agreement, local bakers have assured that no deal has been reached concerning a tax on wheat after a meeting held last March between bakers, millers, retailers and the nation’s Competition Authority, as well as the Botswana Exporters and Manufacturers Association. A 15 percent tax hike on wheat flour was first imposed by the government; the millers who attended the meeting as well as BEMA officials were reportedly the source of the confusion over the rumored agreement. In response, officials from the Bakers Association have reinforced their commitment to fight the tax.
