Global: Large backing challenges proposed American, US Airways merger

In the wake of the news that American Airline and US Airways have planned to merge in a deal that would create the world’s largest airline, the backlash of the announcement has begun. A letter outlining concerns over the merger has ben sent to US Attorney General Eric Holder and to Transportation Department Secretary Ray LaHood. Written by the Business Travel Coalition, the letter, which analyzes the dangers of an ever-concentrated airline industry in the US, was also signed by “scores” of corporate travel investors, travel management companies and travel associations from 24 states and five nations, according to reports. The letter is also to be included in the record for Tuesday’s hearing on the merger by the Senate Judiciary Committee.
