Austria: Bidding war for crucial radio frequencies to start this September

Austria is looking to sell radio frequencies in order to raise about $682 million, the Austrian Telecom Control Commission announced Monday. The frequencies are crucial for high-speed mobile broadband networks. The Commission, also known as the TKK, said it plans to hold the auction in September; Germany, France and Britain recently held similar auctions. Twenty-eight blocks of 800 megahertz, 900 MHz and 1800 MHz are up for grabs and it was announced that there is no bidding limit. While the bidding will likely raise sufficient funds, the TKK says the auction aims to bring better mobile coverage to more rural parts of the nation. A previous auction held by the Czech Republic earlier this month was suspended after bids got so large regulators feared inflated prices for consumers.
