US: Record-breaker for Obama administration with DOJ’s beer lawsuit

Some analysts are calling this a record-breaking era of antitrust cases headed by the Obama administration and its increased efforts to intervene in various markets. Reports are noting that the recent decision by the Department of Justice to block a more than $20 billion beer merger between Anheuser-Busch InBev and Grupo Modelo SAB. The Justice Department’s lawsuit is the seventh currently in litigation, which marks “the most ever at one time,” according to a department spokesperson. According to one analyst, John Connor, an industrial economics professor at Purdue University, the beer lawsuit “represent an attitude of more skepticism” of the benefits of a merger claimed by the relevant parties involved.
