EU: Telecom giants want consolidation, but no agreement with Commission on EU co-op

According to reports, European telecom giants are considering a plan to cooperate in sharing infrastructure across national boarders to maintain competition, though sources ensure that those considerations remain “theoretical.” The plan was reportedly prompted by EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia, who has also reportedly become more lenient on possible infrastructure that crosses borders. A spokesperson for Almunia had confirmed that the Commissioner had met with telecommunications officials last November and said that Almunia considers a single European telecom market “desirable,” as companies currently operate on a national basis. The spokesperson also noted that if a cross-border infrastructure co-op were to emerge, it would solely be initiated by the companies and not forces upon them by the Commission.
