Lithuania: Gazprom-owned gas utility fights E.U. regulation

Lithuania’s gas utility has complained over an E.U. regulation that would force the utility to buy some of its supply from a liquefied natural gas terminal. Lietuvos Dujos, one-third of which is owned by Russia’s Gazprom, has said that the E.U.’s liquefied natural gas regulation violates European law, claiming it will “severely restrict and distort competition.” A complaint has been filed to the Competition Commission requesting infringement proceedings on the matter. The LNG legislation was implemented with the goal of preventing Gazprom from underselling pipeline gas by forcing distributors to buy at least one-quarter of their gas from the terminal.
