South Africa: Competition Commission aids in national healthcare restructuring

The Health Minister has announced an investigation into the nation’s private healthcare sector that will look into how the industry sets its prices. The investigation, says Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, will be launched through the Competition Commission with a goal to propose new legislation that regulates pricing framework of the industry. In response, the Board of Healthcare Funders says the move is a positive direction towards making healthcare more affordable and has announced a cooperation with the South African government in its efforts to restructure the prescribed minimum benefits package, the nearly 300 healthcare provisions that medical schemes must provide, to refocus on primary and preventative care.
