Czech Republic: Areva left out of electricity competition, appeals to antitrust authority

French energy producer Areva has appealed to the Czech Republic’s competition authority UOHS in response to Czech electricity producer CEZ’s refusal to allow Areva to expand their Tremelin plant. Areva was disqualified from reapplying for a tender to build two units at the plant last October over CEZ’s decision that the French company “failed to meet both legal and business criteria” in their operations. Areva has brought the matter up with UOHS, arguing that CEZ’s disqualification leaves only two competitors in the Czech energy market, U.S.’s Westinghouse and Russia’s Atomstroyexport.
