Austria: T-Mobile may abandon Austria market with Orange/H3G merger

T-Mobile is threatening to completely withdraw from Austria over the mobile phone provider’s argument it does not have access to frequencies needed for fourth-generation LTE cell phone products, thereby prohibiting competition. The threat comes in reference to a possible merger between France’s Telecom SA’s Orange and Hutchinson’s H3G, potentially giving H3G majority LTE spectrum. The merger would give H3G and Telekom Austria, the nation’s largest mobile phone provider, dominance over frequencies needed for the iPhone 5, according to T-Mobile’s CEO Andreas Bierwirth.
