ACCC gives go-ahead to plastics merger between Pact and Viscount

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has announced that it will not intervene in the plastics merger between Pact Group and Viscount Plastics. Pact Group’s proposed acquisition of Viscount, the ACCC found, would not significantly affect competition in the markets for the manufacture and supply of plastic pails nationally, and PET containers in Western Australia. Investigation determined that there were sufficient alternative domestic suppliers, as well as the robust ability to self-manufacture PET containers or switch to overseas manufacturers.

    The ACCC also considered how the merger will affect competition with National Can Industries (NCI), the second-largest supplier of plastic pails. Bennamon owns 19.99 percent of NCI, and Bennamon is also related to Pact, one of the two merging parties. However, Bennamon has plans to sell its shares in NCI.
