Group of Ministers accepts Chawla Committee’s call for independent sector regulators

The group of ministers has accepted Ashok Chawla Committee’s recommendation for appointing stronger and more independent regulators in certain sectors. Industries affected would include coal, minerals, telecommunications, petroleum and natural gas. To effect institutional independence, the committee proposes distancing the ministry from appointing and removing regulators. Regulators are also to be supported with staff and a stable budget.
