State film associations fined for anticompetitive practices

The Competition Commission of India has fined 12 state film associations for anticompetiive practices. The penalty imposed is 10 percent of each association’s annual income. The condemned conduct includes discrimination against Hindi films, forcing producers to become members of the associations as a precondition to releasing films, and holding back DTH or satellite releases. Producers such as Reliance Entertainment, UTV, Eros, Ashtavinayak, and Filmkraft had filed cases against the state associations for these practices.
