DOJ probing Highmark’s proposed acquisition of West Penn Allegheny Health System

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the DOJ is seeking documents related to the proposed $475 million acquisition of West Penn Allegheny Health System by Highmark. According to Paul Wood, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (“UPMC”) spokesperson, the DOJ is looking into whether the deal will give Highmark more control over hospital service pricing and competition. Concerns have been raised because if Highmark continues to contract with UPMC after its acquisition, Highmark would be in a position to influence pricing at the two dominant hospital systems in the Pittsburgh area.
