Paul Hastings Strengthens DC Office with Veteran Antitrust Addition

Veteran antitrust lawyer Joshua Soven is making a move from Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison to Paul Hastings, where he will join the Washington, D.C. office, according to Bloomberg. The transition marks another strategic hire for Paul Hastings as the firm continues its expansion in key legal markets.

    Soven, who brings with him expertise in antitrust litigation, private equity, and mergers and acquisitions, spent nearly four years at Paul Weiss. His portfolio includes roles in major corporate transactions, such as IBM’s $6.4 billion acquisition of HashiCorp and Marriott’s $13 billion purchase of Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

    In an interview, Soven expressed enthusiasm for the move, stating, “I’m looking forward to working closely and collaboratively with the Paul Hastings transactional group. They’re in growth mode and antitrust will be a key part of providing high-end representation to their clients.”

    Per Bloomberg, Paul Weiss has experienced a wave of partner departures in recent months. This trend follows controversy surrounding the firm’s agreement to provide $40 million in free legal services to President Donald Trump, a decision that has reportedly caused internal unrest and prompted exits from several high-profile attorneys. Among them, nearly a dozen litigators — many from the team defending Google in antitrust matters related to Android app distribution — left to join a new boutique launched by former Paul Weiss partners Karen Dunn, Jeannie Rhee, and William Isaacson. Additionally, private equity partner Sarah Stasny departed for Proskauer at the end of June.

    Paul Hastings, on the other hand, is in the midst of a significant growth phase. The firm is expanding across practices such as M&A, private equity, finance, restructuring, and litigation. According to Bloomberg, Paul Hastings is on track to boost its revenue by 12% this year, potentially exceeding $2.5 billion.

    “Josh’s diverse antitrust experience in government enforcement at the DOJ and FTC and private practice is instrumental to the continued growth of the brand and scale of our antitrust practice,” said Paul Hastings chairman Frank Lopez in a statement. “We believe Josh’s arrival will enhance our reputation as a destination antitrust platform and support our increased M&A deal volume for clients navigating a complex regulatory landscape.”

    Soven’s addition is seen as a strategic asset for Paul Hastings as regulatory scrutiny intensifies around large-scale mergers and acquisitions.
