Platkin said the firm aims to carry forward the approach he embraced while serving as the state’s top law enforcement official. “We wanted to build a firm that’s built on that spirit of taking on tough fights and winning them,” Platkin said.

During his tenure as attorney general, Platkin frequently aligned with other Democratic attorneys general across the country to challenge policies introduced under Republican President Donald Trump’s administration, per Reuters. Among those efforts was a lawsuit seeking to block an executive order aimed at restricting automatic birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The legal dispute is ongoing, and the U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments again in April, according to Reuters.

Platkin also took action against several prominent corporations while in office. In October, he filed a lawsuit against Amazon, alleging that the company failed to provide legally required workplace accommodations to pregnant employees and workers with disabilities, and terminated some who requested such accommodations, according to Reuters. An Amazon spokesperson denied the allegations, stating that the company offers comprehensive support and accommodations to employees during pregnancy and after childbirth.

That same month, New Jersey brought legal action against gunmaker Sig Sauer in an effort to prevent the sale of its P320 handgun within the state. The lawsuit alleged that the company was aware the firearm could discharge without the trigger being pulled, per Reuters. In a court filing last month, Sig Sauer said New Jersey’s claims have “no basis in law or fact and must be dismissed.”

Platkin’s new firm will include several former senior officials from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. Angela Cai, who previously served as executive assistant attorney general, is joining the practice. Ravi Ramanathan, who led the office’s civil litigation unit focused on gunmakers and gun retailers, will also come aboard. Aaron Haier, formerly a senior counsel to the attorney general, rounds out the founding team, according to Reuters.

The launch of Platkin LLP reflects a broader trend of boutique law firms gaining traction during Trump’s second term. Several such firms have emerged or expanded over the past year, often staffed by attorneys departing large firms or government positions, per Reuters.

The New Jersey attorney general is nominated by the governor and confirmed by the state senate. Platkin was succeeded by Jennifer Davenport, who was appointed acting attorney general by Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill, according to Reuters.
