Australia: ACCC opens up mobile roaming debate

Telecommunications providers, lobby groups and consumers will have one month to wrangle together their arguments to convince the competition watchdog whether or not to force each telco to share its mobile network.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission released a discussion paper on Wednesday on potentially declaring a domestic wholesale mobile roaming service, which would force each mobile carrier to share its network, albeit for a fee.

Submissions on the issue are due November 25.

The possibility of being forced to share networks has led to a row within the telco industry. Telstra has, for years, built up its proposition on having the largest network and has charged a premium for it.
