Bahamas: Mobile data subscribers grow six-fold after new telecom competitor launched

According to a report by the Bahamas’ Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority, mobile data subscribers have increased six-fold since the implementation of the newest telecommunications competitor the Bahamas Telecommunications Company. The annual report noted that in 2011, 18,000 mobile data users had been subscribed; that jumped has dramatically jumped by the end of 2012 to 110,000. The regulatory attributed the hike to increased competition within the sector within the fixed Internet market; BTC has been making strong efforts in the last year to regain control of the broadband Internet sector from current dominator Cable Bahamas. The results, according to the URCA, show that the Bahamas went from the “bottom of international rankings” to a pro-competitive telecommunications market.
