Brazil: Telco regulator okays spectrum auction plans

Brazil’s telecommunications regulator Anatel has reportedly approved of proposed rules for an upcoming spectrum auction, though details of those rules remain unknown.

The rules are set to be published shortly, however, and reports say the auction will likely begin in September.

Earlier this year, Brazil launched plans to free up new spectrum by eliminating analogue TV signals to bring 4G frequencies around the nation. Regulators hope the spectrum will reach 60 percent of the nation by 2017, and the entire nation by November 2018.

Weak demand and high costs are hampering wireless operators from earning profits, according to reports. Officials hope the spectrum auction will boost the industry.
