Following news that tycoon Carlos Slim is set to acquire the additional 70 percent of telecommunications operator KPN in a $9.5 billion buyout, industry experts are now mulling what’s next for Slim and his America Movil firm.
While the Mexico-based company has made no secret of its plans to expand within Europe, which is currently experiencing major industry overhauls as regulators look to consolidate the industry into a single, pan-EU market, the next target for Carlos Slim remains uncertainty.
Some experts predict Austria as the next target, specifically with Telekom Austria. Slim currently has a minority stake in the Austria-based company, though some experts are now predicting a new buyout as Slim promotes his EU agenda.
Reports describe the Austrian telco market as “one of Europe’s most cutthroat.”
