EU: Commission considers prolonging shipping antitrust exemption

 |  March 2, 2014

The European Commission announced late last week that it is inviting comment regarding the regulator’s possible plans to lengthen antitrust exemptions offered to certain shipping companies.

According to a press release, the Commission has implemented maritime consortia block exemption regulations that allow certain shipping firms to cooperate to establish a joint venture.

Those exemptions expire in April of 2015, but the Commission is now seeking opinions regarding whether those exemptions should be extended.

According to the Commission, some consortia are beneficial to consumers as those joint ventures lead to increased output, a benefit that outweighs the risks of anticompetitive results.
