EU: Health concerns lead to protests against free trade agreement with US

 |  January 19, 2015

The various members of the European Union (EU) have no clear majority in the free trade agreement with the US. The agreement would be the world’s largest trade deal, but due to differences in health and food standards there are many concerns. In Berlin alone, 25,000 people joined a rally against the agreement and genetically modified food.

The EU Commission has published some papers on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) to improve transparency on the matter, but the final wording of the partnership will remain confidential until some form of agreement is reached.

The EU and the US have discussed the TTIP since 2013, but still no conclusion is in sight.
