France: Bouygues-Orange merger decision on hold as talks continue

Bouygues has delayed a decision on whether to sell its telecoms business to Orange, saying that talks with France’s biggest telecoms operator “had not progressed sufficiently”.

    In a statement released early on Thursday, the Paris-based construction, media and telecoms conglomerate set a new deadline of the end of the weekend to make “a final decision” on whether or not to pursue the merger plan.

    The two groups have been locked in talks for months over a potential tie-up that would transform France’s telecoms sector, reducing the number of competitors from four to three.
