India: Could antitrust regulator’s powers expand over peers?

The Competition Commission of India, which is now fives years old, may be poised to being regulating other government regulators as India’s economy evolves. According to reports, as natural monopolies result form a restructuring of the economic climate, such as within the water sector, the CCI may be tapped to help balance competition. But it would not be an easy task; according to Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, it would be “fraught with legal difficulties.” According to Chidambaram, the consolidation process within banking and telecommunications will likely lead to competition concerns.
