Indonesia: Government committees look to food oligopolies

According to reports, Indonesia’s National Economic Committee filed a recommendation to the Business Competition Supervisory Commission to handle alleged price-fixing conspiracies within the food industry. The National Economic Committee recently reviewed the market and found “unhealthy levels” of competition within the trade of four specific food markets: rice, beef, sugar and soybeans. According to the report, the biggest threat to competition is an oligopoly in the nation’s market. A representative for the Economic Committee also suggested that the government’s policies of limiting imports may also impact competition.
