Japan: FTC raids 13 firms over road work bid-rigging

 |  January 29, 2015

The Fair Trade Commission raided 13 road-paving firms Wednesday for suspected bid-rigging in projects to repair roads damaged by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Among the raided contractors are Nippo Corp., Maeda Road Construction Co., NipponRoad Co., Obayashi Road Corp. and Toa Road Corp., informed sources told Jiji Press.

The road-paving firms are suspected of having rigged their bids in expressway restoration projects offered by a local unit of East Nippon Expressway Co. , for at least the past few years.

To further investigate before filing criminal charges with prosecutors, the antimonopoly watchdog plans to question company officials in charge of the projects ordered by East Nippon Expressway.
