Mexico: America Movil the unsaid target of new telco regulator

Mexico’s new telecommunications watchdog announced Wednesday it has contacted companies it plans to target for tougher scrutiny; while the authority did not reveal which companies it has contacted, reports say the move is likely the beginning of its efforts to reign in the nation’s top wireless operator America Movil and top broadcaster Televisa.

    The Federal Telecommunications Institute was given new powers earlier this year to crackdown on anticompetitive practices by dominant competitors in the nation’s telco industry. Government officials have largely zeroed-in on the dominant presence of America Movil, owned by billionaire Carlos Slim, for its 70 percent control of the wireless market and 80 percent control if its fixed-like market.

    Televisa controls more than 60 percent of the television sector.

    The watchdog’s head Gabriel Contreras declined to name the companies it has contacted.
