Mexico’s Federal Commission of Economic Competition (COFECE) has announced the launch of a market study into the food retail sector, with the aim of analyzing the state and extent of free competition.
In this study, market structures, regulations, or public policies that could affect the performance of this sector will be identified and, if applicable, recommendations will be proposed to mitigate the risks to competition.
In 2018, retail commerce contributed 9.5% of Mexico’s GDP. The 2014 Economic Census states that there were 995 thousand 554 economic agents in the country dedicated to the sale of food and beverages, including self-service stores.
