The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington and claims that Microsoft and Valve engaged in a pricing agreement that reduced competition between their respective digital storefronts. According to Bloomberg, gamer plaintiffs allege that Microsoft agreed to match prices for PC games sold through its platform and Valve’s Steam marketplace, creating uniform pricing that limited competitive pressure and negatively affected consumers.

Per Bloomberg, the plaintiffs contend that the alleged arrangement discouraged meaningful competition on price and ultimately reduced incentives for companies to improve game quality, content, and consumer offerings. The lawsuit seeks class-action status on behalf of affected gamers who purchased PC games through the platforms.

According to Bloomberg, the complaint alleges that the agreement operated in a way that prevented either company from significantly undercutting the other on game pricing. The filing claims that such conduct distorted market dynamics in the highly competitive PC gaming sector and harmed consumers by limiting the benefits typically associated with price competition.

The lawsuit adds to a growing list of legal challenges involving the digital gaming industry and the business practices of major platform operators. Valve, which runs the dominant Steam marketplace, has previously faced antitrust scrutiny and other legal disputes related to its position in the PC gaming ecosystem.

Neither Microsoft nor Valve had publicly responded to the allegations at the time the lawsuit was filed, according to Bloomberg. The case is in its early stages, and the plaintiffs will need to prove their claims in court.

The litigation could draw significant attention from regulators and industry observers given the size of the PC gaming market and the influence of both companies. Microsoft operates its own gaming storefront and publishing business, while Valve’s Steam platform remains the leading digital marketplace for PC games worldwide. The outcome of the case could have broader implications for pricing practices and competition within the video game distribution industry.
