Norway: Mobile operator acquisition clears watchdog hurdles

 |  February 5, 2015

Norway’s competition watchdog has green-lighted TeliaSonera, nation’s second largest mobile operator’s acquisition of Tele2. They had announced plans to acquire smaller rival Tele2 for $700 million in July last year.

The Norwegian regulator, the Competition Authority leading had some objections leading TeliaSonera to offer remedial measures designed to allay competition fears. The authority extended the deadline for its final assessment of the deal until this Thursday, when it announced it has now decided to let the merger go through.

To counter the watchdog’s concerns that the acquisition would lead to higher prices and less competition, TeliaSonera offered a number of commitments. TeliaSonera will sell some of its mobile network infrastructure to ICE. They will also sign a deal with ICE of offer roaming and other wholesale services.
