Norway: Spectrum auction pumps competition into sector

 |  December 10, 2013

A recently held spectrum auction in Norway is set to inject a big boost of competition into the nation’s wireless market as newcomer TelcoData surprised competitors with its rigorous bidding.

The nation raised $290 million in the auction, with TelcoData paying the most for its spectrum to challenge Telenor, TeliaSonera and Tele2. According to reports, Sweden-based Tele2 failed to win 3G or 4G spectrum.

Following the bidding, the nation’s Post and Telecommunications Authority said TelcoData’s competitive response to the auction “will clearly contribute to reinforce competition.”

Reports are now pondering whether TelcoData is considering a partnership with Tele2.
