Philippines: Antitrust bill to face public hearing

The Philippines’ House Trade and Industry Committee is set to introduce a comprehensive antitrust bill for public hearing this week, reports say.

House chairman and Las Piñas Rep. Mark Villar, along with others, endorsed the bill as other senators filed their own versions of the legislation.

Reports say the proposals aim to introduce competition laws ahead of the ASEAN Economic Community’s launch.

Reports late last week found that the Philippines were one of five ASEAN nations without a comprehensive antitrust law, a fact the nation is now looking to correct.

The ASEAN association aims to strengthen economic and social ties between the 10 members of the Southeast Asian nations. The ASEAN Economic Community initiative is a goal of the ASEAN nations to strengthen economies.
