Philippines: East Asia conference urges establishment of competition law

The Philippines were urged to establish effective competition law as a path to economic growth during the Eighth East Asia Conference on Competition Law and Policy, held Tuesday.

    Of prominence at the event included Japans’ Fair Trade Commission chairman Kazayuki Sugumoto, who described competition law as “necessary to increase productivity for economic growth as it promotes lower costs and provides equal opportunity in the market.”

    Cooperation between all government agencies was also promoted as vital for the success of such policy.

    The event was held in the Philippines, where there is no competition law as of yet; the proposed antitrust bill failed passage within the Senate and Lower House.
