South Korea: Ignoring warnings likely to result in fines for LG Uplus

 |  October 28, 2013

South Korea’s telecommunications regulator has said it will impose heavy fines on LG’s South Korean unit LG Uplus for high handset subsidies after the company reportedly ignored earlier warnings from the watchdog.

The Korea Communications Commission announced the fine Monday and confirmed that the company offered “illegal amounts in handset subsidies to lure customers from rival companies.”

A probe into the matter is currently under way and the KCC said it would announce the investigation’s results after it is concluded.

The nation’s wireless market is dominated by three carriers, and the KCC has been looking into which more frequently violates subsidy rules for new customers. LG Uplus is currently looking to gain the number-two spot in the market and beat its rival KT for LTE services.
