US President Donald Trump announced Friday that discussions with China regarding a potential agreement on the future of TikTok’s U.S. operations are expected to begin early next week. The President indicated that talks may involve Chinese President Xi Jinping or one of his representatives. “We pretty much have a deal,” Trump said, referencing efforts to transfer ownership of TikTok’s American assets away from its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

Trump’s comments follow an executive deadline he extended last month, giving ByteDance until September 17 to sell its U.S. TikTok operations to American interests. Per Reuters, the proposed agreement would create a new U.S.-based company to manage the platform domestically, with a majority stake held by American investors.

Earlier efforts to secure such a deal had stalled this spring after Beijing signaled it would block any sale following Trump’s announcement of increased tariffs on Chinese imports. As Reuters reported, the potential need for China’s approval could again complicate the process.

“We will probably have to get a deal approved by China,” Trump acknowledged. When asked about Beijing’s likely response, he tempered expectations: “I’m not confident, but I think so,” adding that he shares a “great relationship” with President Xi and believes the agreement would benefit both nations.
