Ukraine: EU says aid not a ploy to win support

The European Commission is reportedly downplaying talk that it is vying for support from Ukraine through a major state aid package, denying plans to enter into a “biding competition” with Russia to win over loyalty.

While the European Commission confirmed it is mulling a possible state aid package to aid the nation through a financial struggle, the regulator denied suggestions that the aid is part of a measure to win back Ukrainian support after the nation denied a trade agreement with the EU in favor for closer ties with Russia.

That trade agreement offer remains on the table, the Commission said.

State aid falls under the scope of competition law in the European Union.
