Unipol-Fondiaria merger approved, with conditions

Italy’s competition watchdog has approved Unipol’s proposed acquisition of Fondiaria. However, its approval is conditioned on the merged insurer unwinding its ties with Mediobanca (Fondiaria’s parent, Premafin, owns 4 percent of Mediobanca). In addition, Unipol must sell its insurance portfolios and agency networks.
