US: Another antitrust suit plagues NCAA

 |  September 2, 2014

The National Collegiate Athletic Association is facing yet another antitrust lawsuit just weeks after losing a major case over the compensation of student athletes.

According to reports, the NCAA is facing a class action filed by former Colorado State football player Durrell Chamorro last week. The plaintiffs are seeking damages for football players impacted by a former rule that banned multiyear scholarships.

The class action also challenges the NCAA’s yearly cap on scholarships by school.

Reports say the lawsuit is partially using the recent litigation field by former basketball star Ed O’Bannon. That case challenged the NCAA’s failure to compensate its players for the use of their likeness, names and images in various products and other business endeavors.

Reports say the latest class action cites the O’Bannon ruling, made early last month, that found that “FBS football … [is] the only supplier of the unique bundles of goods and services” provided to recruits.
