US: Baseball joins Comcast, DirecTV in fight to end antitrust programming suit
Major League Baseball has reportedly joined cable giants Comcast and DirecTV in combating an antitrust class action that is challenging the way sports programming is sold to cable and satellite companies.
Reports say the class action is challenging how leagues will divide programming markets and then strike deals with program broadcasters to sell out-of-market sports packages. Those deals, the plaintiffs say, lead to spiked costs for cable consumers.
The lawsuit has been consolidated with another case involving the National Hockey League.
Reports say the MLB, Comcast and DirecTV each spoke to a federal judge seeking a victory through summary judgment.
The case earned national attention in 2012 when another judge refused to dismiss the case.
