US: DOJ taps Shapiro for AT&T-Time Warner

 |  January 31, 2018

The Department of Justice (DOJ), which has sued to block the telecom giant’s US$85 billion purchase of Time Warner, has reached a tentative agreement with Carl Shapiro to be its economics expert, the source said.

Mr. Shapiro most recently served as the Federal Trade Commission’s expert economics witness in its successful 2016 suit blocking Staples from buying Office Depot.

The 62-year-old academic worked for the Justice Department twice as the deputy assistant attorney general for economics in the antitrust division — first under President Clinton and then under President Obama.

Mr. Shapiro would be paid for his testimony. Barring a settlement, the trial is scheduled to begin on March 19.
