US/Germany: Bayer makes $1.1B birth control purchase

Pharmaceutical company Bayer, based in Germany, has reportedly agreed to pay $1.1 billion for California-based Conceptus, a manufacturer of an irreversible birth control method called Essure. According to Bayer’s CEO, the move was a “strategic” way to expand the company in the birth control market, as it already markets birth control pills. The parties expect to complete the transaction by mid-2013 while acknowledging that the deal is subject to antitrust regulators.
