US: Heineken turns down SABMiller approach

 |  September 14, 2014

Global beer brewing conglomerate SABMiller reportedly approached Heineken with a takeover offer but was quickly dismissed.

Unnamed sources said Heineken rejected the takeover offer that would have combined the world’s second- and third-largest brewers. SABMiller is said to be searching for a way to boost its competitive edit against top rival Anheuser-Busch InBev.

But the Heineken family, which controls the company, turned down the offer despite SABMiller’s proposal to have the family one of the largest shareholders of the new company.

Reports, which did not indicate the value of the reported bid, said that the offer was proposed some time in the last two weeks.
