In an in-depth interview, Instagram cofounders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger revealed how they decided to grant a Facebook buyout of their hugely popular photo phone application, dismissing a competing offer from Twitter. The interview, which appears in Vanity Fair, reveals that Systrom was already friends with Facebook founder Mark Zukerberg, with their relationship dating back to college years. An official offer to buy Instagram was reportedly made by Zuckerberg over a campfire, a casual setting for what ultimately became a $1 billion buyout of the phone app. The acquisition was finalized last April and generated much discussion at the time concerning the rivalry with Twitter.
