US: Noted antitrust and consumer protection lawyer joins McDermott as Partner

McDermott Will & Emery announced today that experienced antitrust and consumer protection lawyer Bilal Sayyed has joined the firm as a partner in its Washington, DC office.

Mr. Sayyed joins McDermott from Kirkland & Ellis, where he was a partner, and brings a broad-based practice focused on competition and consumer issues. He represents businesses before the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in mergers and acquisitions, civil, and criminal antitrust investigations, and counsels clients regarding consumer protection laws and federal agency consumer protection inquiries. He regularly represents activist investors on antitrust and Hart-Scott-Rodino Act compliance matters. Mr. Sayyed counsels and represents clients with respect to their compliance with federal and state consumer protection laws, including advertising claims, data security and privacy issues, and multi-level marketing matters.

Mr. Sayyed previously served at the FTC as an attorney advisor to FTC Chairman Timothy J. Muris, counseling the Chairman on a broad range of antitrust and consumer protection matters across a variety of industries, including the pharmaceuticals, hospitals and healthcare, energy and mining, transportation and defense, entertainment and gaming, and retail and consumer products. While at the FTC, he also served in the Office of Policy and Planning, as an advisor to current FTC Commissioner Maureen K. Ohlhausen. Since leaving the government, Bilal has represented clients before the Antitrust Division, the FTC, and competition agencies in Europe and Asia.

He joins a multi-faceted Antitrust & Competition practice group at McDermott, which includes many lawyers with whom he has worked on various matters in the past.
