The Obama administration is calling on the FCC Friday to create competition for set-top cable boxes.
In a statement released from the White House, the administration says a recent study shows 99 percent of all cable subscribers lease a set-top box and pay an average of $231 per year.
President Obama will issue an Executive Order Friday calling on departments and agencies to look for options to create competition for cable box makers and other industries while informing Americans of their options. The move would also create opportunities for Americans to own a device instead of “spending nearly $1,000 over four years to lease a set of behind-the-times boxes.”
The hope is in 30 days from this order that government agencies will find a way to promote more competition, put a halt to “price fixing,” and “behaviors that appear to violate our antitrust laws.”
