US: Second bid rigging defendant pleads not guilty

A leading Albany developer pleaded not guilty Monday to charges in a bid-rigging scheme as part of a sweeping federal and state corruption investigation.

A felony complaint filed Thursday by state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman accuses Joseph Nicolla of colluding with the head of SUNY Polytechnic Institute, Alain Kaloyeros, to rig a bid on a $27 million student housing project.

Nicolla’s lawyer stated, “Joe Nicolla never ever ever has engaged in bid-rigging… He’s a remarkable businessman who has played by the rules every single day of his life. These charges are brought without facts to support them.”

Nicolla was released on his own recognizance.
